What Is a Parliamentarian?
A Parliamentarian is one who, by knowledge and experience, is competent
to advise on correct procedures for the conduct of business in
organizational meetings.
How Can a Parliamentarian Help?
A parliamentarian can help by:
- Giving advice to the president;
- Suggesting procedures to expedite the business of the
organization;
- Preparing agendas;
- Assisting with preparation of reports of boards, officers,
and committees;
- Consulting with the president and board on procedural problems;
- Explaining proper business procedure, when requested;
- Assisting with elections;
- Serving conventions;
- Preparing resolutions.
Why Should I Study Parliamentary Law and Procedures?
If you belong to an organization, it is essential for you to be able
to participate actively in meetings and to express your views.
A Knowledge of the fundamentals of parliamentary procedure can help you
participate in an intelligent and decisive way. Thus you can make a
more effective contribution to your organization.
If you do not belong to an organization, you will find that the spirit
of justice and fairness exemplified by parliamentary procedure will
help you at home, at work, in your community, and in every phase of
your life.
